AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX – release date, price, specs and benchmarks

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the beefier sibling of the RX 7900 XT, and it might battle the RTX 4090. We’ll have to wait for reviews of the graphics card to hit the net, but it’s priced well below what many were expecting, which means it could be the next value GPU.

It takes more than raw power to snatch the best graphics card crown and take on the Nvidia RTX 4090, especially since its rival has Nvidia DLSS in its corner. Fortunately, the XTX will have AMD FSR 3 in its corner in 2023 – at least when games finally get the FidelityFX Super Resolution update.

Following the official announcement, we know a lot about the XTX and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Release Date

Rejoice! The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX release date is fast approaching. The XTX and XT will be available on December 13, 2022.

Much like Nvidia, there’s still no sign of entry-level or mid-range cards, but those could make an appearance in 2023.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Price

Whichever way you slice it, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX price is its most alluring feature, coming in at under $1,000. It didn’t give in to rising manufacturing costs and instead reduced its Radeon RX 6900 XT MSRP slightly with a $999 price tag.

That’s $600 less than the Nvidia RTX 4090 – two-thirds the price of its competitor. That’s enough of a saving to get the best gaming processor from Intel’s previous generation Alder Lake or AMD’s current Ryzen 9 5900X.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Specs

The official AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX specifications show that the graphics card has 24 GB of GDDR6 RAM. While that’s the same amount as the Nvidia RTX 4090, its rival packs better GDDR6X memory, though that’s likely one of the ways AMD has managed to bring the price down.

Along with the XT model, the RX 7900 XTX beat the best gaming monitor, being one of the first devices to include a DisplayPort 2.1 connector. It’s capable of 8K resolutions at 165Hz or 4K at 480Hz refresh rate. The displays will eventually catch up, with the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 being one of the first DisplayPort 2.1-armed 8K displays launched at CES 2023.

You also won’t need to switch wires or use a 12VHPWR adapter, risking the RTX 4090 fusion cable problem. The 7900 XTX stays true to what you know, armed with two 8-pin power connectors pins. This means that it must be compatible with the best power supply without any unnecessary errors.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX benchmarks, comparing GPU to previous generation

Benchmarks AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

We’ll have to run our own AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX benchmarks to see how it performs against the RTX 4090, especially as FSR 3 is set to compete against Nvidia DLSS 3.0. AMD conducted its own tests, however, showing the full 4K strengths of its flagship GPU.

Internal tests show the RX 7900 XTX to be between 1.5 and 1.7 times faster than the RX 6950 XT at 4K resolutions, even in games released in 2022 like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. There are even 8K teasers with the help of AMD FSR, with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla hitting up to 96fps.

AMD might release a bloated RX 7950 XTX later, but it’s focused on reasonable pricing for now.

Naturally, even the best gaming PC will struggle with resolutions beyond 4K without the help of upscaling software, so 8K will only be possible in games that have added FSR support.
