A small-town mayor has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after he was accused of shooting a family during a road rage incident on Halloween night, local news outlet KPTV reported.

On Monday night, a family of four called authorities after driving down Highway 281 behind an SUV that the family said was driving “erratically” before going off the road.

As they slowed down and passed the vehicle “to obtain a description of the suspect vehicle for the purpose of reporting the erratic driving to the sheriff’s office”, a man, who appeared to be Dowen Jones – the mayor of Rufus, Oregon, a town with a population of less than 300 people – got out of the passenger side of the vehicle and shot them, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The family, including a 5-year-old child and an 8-year-old child, were not hit by any bullets.

Authorities arrested Jones on Tuesday. He was charged with one count of attempted murder and four counts of attempted first-degree assault.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and the Dalles Police Department are investigating.

He is being held on $100,000 bail and is due in court Nov. 10, NBC News reported.

Jones was elected in 2018 after receiving 76 votes, against other candidates who received four votes. Before being mayor, he was an electrician and a photographer, the outlet reported.

“That’s terrible. He’s a good man. That’s crazy,” Council Chairman Scott Holliday said Wednesday, according to NBC News.

“Nobody understands exactly what happened, let alone why. People think of him. He’s just a good guy. So it’s very, very painful that something like this (happens). Nobody wants to see someone he loves, knows and loves very much, in trouble,” Holliday continued.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and the Dalles Police Department did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Information about Jones’ attorney was not immediately available. Insider has reached out to Rufus Town Hall for comment.
