Delphi murders update: Everything we know about Richard Allen as he is pictured for the first time since his arrest

The 50-year-old married man arrested in connection with the 2017 Delphi murders on Friday has now been photographed for the first time – more than five years after the double murder of teenage best friends Libby German and Abby Williams.

Richard Matthew Allen, of Delphi, Indiana, was arrested around midnight and taken to Carroll County Jail. He has since been transferred to a public facility for his own safety.

Local outlet FOX59 has now obtained a state-released photo of Mr Allen, with a government source confirming it depicts the man currently behind bars.

The photo bears some resemblance to police sketches of the suspect that were made public during the investigation – while the teens’ killer was still at large.

It is currently unclear what the charges against Mr Allen are, but law enforcement sources have described it as a ‘major development’ in the high-profile case which has rocked the small tight-knit community from Delphi and which has not been resolved for more than half. a decade.

Libby’s sister Kelsi German tweeted on Friday before the arrest was made public that “today is the day” they’ve been waiting for.

“Just know how grateful I am for all of you. No comment at this time, any questions please contact the Carroll County District Attorney’s Office. There is tentatively a press conference Monday at 10 a.m. We we’ll say more then. Today is the day,” she said.

Indiana State Police and family members of the victims are scheduled to hold a news conference Monday morning to provide an update on the case.

Prior to his sudden arrest on Friday, Mr Allen’s name had never been publicly linked to the murders.

Here is what we know about him:

Who is Richard Allen?

It is unclear what information led to Mr Allen’s arrest now, more than five years after the 2017 killings.

In August, Indiana State Police were spotted searching the Wabash River in Peru – about 40 minutes east of Delphi – in connection with the case.

At the time of the murders, Mr Allen would have been 44 years old.

The 50-year-old is a local resident of Delphi, where teenage girls used to live with their families.

According to online records, Mr. Allen has lived in Delphi since at least 2006 and in Indiana his entire adult life.

He is married and works as a pharmacy technician. He received his most recent pharmaceutical license in February 2018, a year after the murders.

A local resident told Fox59 that Mr. Allen is currently working at the local CVS store – coming into contact with members of the community as part of his job.

“When I go into CVS myself as a client, it asks me ‘do you need help?’ I would say ‘no,’ said Chandler Underhill, the manager of the local Brick & Mortar Pub, where he said Mr Allen was a regular.

“Just like a normal guy I’ve seen for the past two years, not really thinking about anything.”

Mr Underhill said Mr Allen always looked ‘normal’ when he entered the pub where he worked.

“I would talk; he wouldn’t say much. He looks like a normal guy,” he said.

“One of my waiters told me he wouldn’t talk much.”

Mr. Allen appears to have no criminal record.

However, the Carroll County Jail file lists Mr Allen as Craigh Ross Rentfrow.

What happened to Libby and Abby?

Libby and Abby went missing on February 13, 2017 after taking a hike along the Monon High Bridge Trail in Delphi, Indiana.

Their bodies were discovered the next day in a wooded area about half a mile from the trail.

For years, police refused to say how the girls died and revealed few details about the crime scene.

However, shocking new details about the murders have emerged in a search warrant request obtained by The Murder Sheet podcast and shared with The Independent back in May.

The warrant, filed by an FBI agent investigating the 2017 murders and partially redacted, was to search the home of a local man, Ronald Logan.

In it, the agent revealed that the girls lost “a lot” of blood when they died and that their killer allegedly moved and staged their bodies, before taking some kind of memento of the scene.

For the first time, the warrant also revealed that the teenagers had been killed by some type of weapon. The word for the weapon was redacted in the document.

The murderer was said to have been covered in the blood of victims following the killings due to “the large amount of blood lost by the victims at the crime scene”, it reads.

“Due to the nature of the victim’s injuries, it is almost certain that the perpetrator would have put blood on his person/clothing.”

Scary images of the suspect

The day the girls went missing, Libby had posted photos of her and Abby walking along the path on Snapchat.

The happy image of the two best friends is believed to be the last photo of them before they died.

In a move that moved the investigation forward, Libby also captured grainy video on her phone of a man dressed in blue jeans, a blue jacket and a cap walking along the road bridge of abandoned iron.

Investigators released a grainy image from the video and a chilling sound of the man telling the two girls, “Go down the hill.”

Investigators have long suspected that this man is the girls’ killer and have praised the girls for documenting the video as evidence.

So far, the man has never been identified.

Police described the man as a white male between the ages of 16 and 40, between 5’6″ and 5’10” tall and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds.

Several police sketches have been released of a man matching the description of the man in the footage.

Other names related to the case

Mr Allen’s arrest marks the first time his name has been publicly linked to the unsolved murders.

Over the years, authorities have targeted several other men.

A 27-year-old Indiana man came into the limelight last year when the online account he used to groom underage girls online was linked to teenage victims. His home had been raided on suspicion of child pornography charges just two weeks after the 2017 murders.

In December 2021, Indiana State Police announced that officials had “discovered” a fake online profile called anthony_shots.

Kegan Anthony Kline is the man behind the fake anthony_shots account

The profile ran from 2016 to 2017 on platforms including Snapchat and Instagram and used photos of a well-known male model, describing him as extremely wealthy and owning numerous sports cars.

Investigators said the person behind the account was Kegan Anthony Kline, a 27-year-old man with addresses in Kokomo and Peru, near Delphi.

According to an affidavit, Kline impersonated the model in order to groom underage girls and have them send nude photos and their addresses and try to get them to meet him. The male model whose photos were used had no connection to the case.

Kline was arrested for child sexual abuse and child exploitation images linked to the account in 2020.

He allegedly admitted to investigators that he groomed underage girls online.

The affidavit says Indiana State Police and the FBI executed a search warrant on February 25, 2017 – less than two weeks after Abby and Libby were murdered – at Kline’s home in Peru after having traced the user from the anthony_shots profile to the property.

Ron Logan lied to investigators about where he was the day Libby and Abby went missing

Kline allegedly told investigators that he would use social media accounts to talk to underage girls and that he had exchanged messages with and received around 100 sexual photos and around 20 sexually explicit videos from around 15 underage girls.

However, he denied any knowledge or involvement in the deaths of the two teenagers.

Kline has been charged with 30 crimes in 2020 for this case.

The documents, filed in 2020 and heavily redacted, do not mention Libby and Abby’s murders and he has not been charged with involvement in their deaths.

Libby’s grandmother, Becky Patty, said The Independent in December that the teenager had never mentioned talking to anyone online before her death and that there had never been any indication that the two girls had arranged to meet anyone online. line the day they were killed.

Investigators have urged anyone who has communicated with, met or attempted to meet the person posing as anthony_shots to provide information.

Before that, Ronald Logan had already been on police radar, according to the 2017 search warrant request.

Mr Logan owned the land on which Libby and Abby’s bodies were found and his home was just 1,400ft from the crime scene.

The families of Libby German and Abby Williams are expected to be at the press conference on Monday

The warrant application cites multiple complaints that he was violent toward women and possessed multiple weapons, including handguns and knives.

Mr Logan also allegedly lied about his whereabouts at the time of the teens’ disappearance, saying he was out of the area with a friend on the afternoon of February 13 when phone location data laptop actually placed it in the area around the trail.

The document also states that his voice was “not incompatible” with the man captured in the video by Libby.

Mr Logan was never charged and died in 2020, before the case was resolved.

It is currently unclear whether Mr. Allen has any connection to Mr. Logan or Kline or to the anthony_shots account.
