Fungi That Cause Lung Infections Can Lurk In The Soil Of Most U.S. States

Soil fungi whose spores can cause serious lung infections may be much more prevalent in the United States than experts thought, according to a new study.

These fungi include Histoplasm, known as histo for short, which is a genus of fungus that causes histoplasmosis. Authoritative sources, such as the Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention (opens in a new tab) (CDC) and the online medical resource StatPearls (opens in a new tab)state that the mushrooms can be found in the central and eastern states of the United States, especially in areas near the Ohio and Mississippi valleys.
