Karine Jean-Pierre wrongly claims that Biden visited the border

CLAIM: President Joe Biden “went to the border,” according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

VERDICT: FALSE. Biden has never visited the southern border of the United States in 50 years of politics, although he has already been driven by it in El Paso.

Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked Jean-Pierre on Friday whether President Biden would accept an invitation from Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the likely future Speaker of the House, to travel to the southern border of the United States. United.

As Charlie Spiering of Breitbart News noted, Jean-Pierre laughed at the question.

When Doocy said – correctly – that Biden had never been to the border, Jean-Pierre said, “Look, he’s been there, he’s been to the border.”

She didn’t respond when Doocy asked when, exactly, Biden went to the border.

In September 2021, then-press secretary Jen Psaki responded to a similar question from Doocy by saying she didn’t know if Biden had ever visited the border.

A month later, she said: ‘It was reported that he drove across the border when he was on the campaign trail in 2008.’ She seemed to be quoting a Washington Post article that verified Biden’s claim to have visited the border and found that “Biden briefly crossed the border during a 2008 election campaign” in El Paso, Texas.

The Job added:

On October 17, he held a rally in Mesilla, N.M. Trip press secretary David E. Wade told The Fact Checker that the plane landed at El Paso airport and then the motorcade took almost an hour drive to the suburb of Las Cruces. The ride took Biden along a road that skirts the US-Mexico border for a few minutes. “For most of us, this was uncharted territory,” said Wade, who recalled some reporters joking about crossing the border during the event.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who is nominally tasked with addressing the “root causes” of the ongoing migrant crisis at the border, made an actual visit to the border last year, also in El Paso, after that the White House feared being overtaken by former President Donald Trump, who had already announced a visit.
