One of the most exciting fighters in the UFC is campaigning to be Conor McGregor’s returning opponent in 2023.

“I think that’s the fight to be had,” lightweight stallion Michael Chandler told ESPN recently.

Chandler lost a fiercely competitive back-and-forth war to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281 earlier this month, in an MMA matchup that will likely earn Fight of the Year honors.

Chandler grabbed Poirier and spat blood in his opponent’s face, but lost via submission in round three when he tapped Poirier’s rear naked choke.

Despite the blatant fouling, Chandler’s battle with Poirier earned him a performance-related bonus from UFC boss Dana White – the fourth time he’s won a bonus for his unique brand of violence since he took over. left Bellator for the market-leading MMA promotion.

Previously, he finished Dan Hooker in his UFC debut in 2021, lost a UFC lightweight title fight to Charles Oliveira in his second fight, and was outclassed by Justin Gaethje the same year. .

In 2022, he bounced back with a knockout win over Tony Ferguson when he revamped the veteran MMA fighter’s face with a front kick, before dropping the submission loss to Poirier.

Now he wants McGregor

For his next challenge, Chandler called up McGregor — who could return to MMA for a comeback fight sometime in 2023, likely around International Fight Week in July at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“Who the hell do you want to be on the other side of the Octagon” of 34-year-old McGregor “than me, right now, at this point?” said Chandler, 36.

“We’re the same height, we’re the same weight,” Chandler said, adding that he’s one of the most exciting fighters on the entire UFC roster.

“The UFC knows it, I think Conor knows it, Conor’s team knows it, [and] everyone in MMA knows that.”

He added, “Who’s a bigger draw or bigger fight than me and Conor right now?”

A McGregor fight isn’t just a payday, he says

He said people could tell he was “chasing the payday” that comes with sharing a pay-per-view main event against arguably the most famous face in Ultimate Fights.

However, it’s also about chasing the biggest shows possible and delivering for fight fans, Chandler said.

“I want the brightest lights, the biggest platforms. I want to go out there on the verge of a heart attack because the moment is so big. And what’s bigger than fighting Conor McGregor? he said.

“I have to be the most electrifying man in the UFC right now. This is the biggest fight to make, this is the most PPV sales that can be made right now, right now, worldwide of MMA.

“I think it’s going to happen in International Wrestling Week 2023.”
