New Oahu Water Sports Park in Hawaii Opening Next February – Activities Available to Visitors

The world’s largest wave pool is coming to Hawaii as part of a $40 million development slated to open early next year.

When it’s finished in February, the Wai Kai Wave project will accommodate 30 surfers for 45-minute intervals, according to the project’s developers.

It is part of a larger $100 million project along the Ewa shoreline in Oahu.

“It has to be a facility that attracts people who have never surfed to professional surfers,” said Larry Caster, director of retail development for Wai Kai Commercial Development. Hawaii News Now.

In addition to the wave pool, there will be a lagoon, club, restaurants, etc. Hotels are planned all the way on the Diamond Head side of the project, but the developers expect most activity to come from local residents.

Wave pool

The wave pool will be the star of the show.

“The 100ft wide wave will have the ability to be raced like a giant open canvas to shred on (great for contests or pro surf demos) but can also be split into two or three surf channels with waves that can be adapted from beginner surfers (2-3ft wave) to advanced levels (heads up wave), on demand,” the developers explain.

It will also host body surfing and other forms of participation in addition to traditional surfboards.

The developers warn, however, that it’s for those who really want to surf and experience the real deal.

“It’s not a novelty or amusement product like those that use shallow water sheet wave technology in water parks and on cruise ships,” the developers claim.

It will also include a bar and restaurant with surf-side seating, making it a great place to watch the action in the pool.

“You can just imagine yourself hanging out there and having something to eat or a beer in the afternoon,” Caster said.

The lagoon and more

The developers hope the area will attract more than surfers, primarily with the adjacent 52-acre lagoon.

Proclaimed the largest inland body of water in Hawaii, the lagoon will be designed for paddling and playing in the water, sheltered from ocean currents.

It will include a rental station for paddle boards, kayaks, a six-person outrigger canoe, and more. There will also be space for yoga and other out-of-water activities.

The Nalo Kai Club will include an air-conditioned lounge, concierge services, cabanas and catering services. It will be available to both members and those with day passes.
