Tottenham will kick off the new year in the Premier League with a clash against AstonVilla on Sunday. Two teams who would like to quickly put 2022 behind them, it’s a tie that could get quite interesting based on Spur’s recent history. Conceding the first goal in six consecutive matches, Antonio Conte needs the Spurs defense to focus more, but Aston Villa’s results have improved since Unai Emery’s appointment at the start of November.

In four matches in charge, Emery’s only defeat in the league came at the hands of liverpool with Villa beating Manchester United at its beginnings. Spurs have been in mixed form but have generally been able to recover in the second half of games to get a result, but with this Villa side falling behind early may be too difficult to come back on.

Featured Game | Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa

Tottenham: Conte will get a boost to his defense as Christian Romero is back in the squad after winning the World Cup with Argentina. Having not played for Tottenham since mid-October due to hamstring issues, his presence should help settle what has been an erratic defense this season. The game will come too soon to Rodrigo Bentancur and Richarlison who are still nursing injuries sustained during the World Cup, but Heung Min-Son, Harry Kaneand Dejan Kulusevsky should be enough to ensure a result in the match.

AstonVilla: After starting Villa’s game against Liverpool on the bench, Emi Martinez is set to start after his World Cup win, improving Emery’s defence. Jacob Ramsey will miss the game but is set to return from his thigh injury as Diego Carlos is still away until further notice.

Despite struggling in their last few games, in front of their home stalwarts, Tottenham will slip past Aston Villa as the race for the top four spots gets tighter by the day. Take: Tottenham 3, Aston Villa 1.
