Word Cup Daily: Lionel Messi keeps Argentina tournament hopes alive

Argentina avoided elimination on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Mexico at the Lusail stadium, while France became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage with their second victory of the tournament.

Here’s everything that happened at the World Cup on Saturday and what to watch for on Sunday.

Australia 1, Tunisia 0

Australia got the result they needed against Tunisia, picking up three critical points, but will need a win or draw against Denmark on Wednesday (10 a.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app) to avoid a loss. to enter a tiebreaker with Denmark or, less likely, Tunisia.

Poland 2, Saudi Arabia 0

Finally, Robert LewandowskiI scored his first World Cup goal. More importantly, it was a win that put Poland top of Group C. Poland can secure their spot in the knockout stage with a win over Argentina on Wednesday (2 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app) – anything less than that would result in a tiebreaker or, worst-case scenario, elimination.

France 2, Denmark 1

France clinched their place in the knockout stage with a 2-1 victory over Denmark, making them the first defending World Cup champions since 2006 not to be knocked out in the group stage of the tournament. The curse – at least for the next four years – is broken.

Kylian Mbappe makes a bit of history itself. With his two goals against Denmark, he joins Pelé as the only player to score seven World Cup goals before the age of 24. He also caught up with Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia in the race for the Golden Boot. It was a good day for Blues.

Argentina 2, Mexico 0

It wasn’t pretty, but Argentina canceled out a well-deserved win over Mexico. Now he is in a position to qualify for the knockout stage with a win against Poland. Considering how he started his tournament, things could be much worse.

Mexico’s fate will also depend on the result they achieve in their final group stage game. A win would give them four points, more than Argentina would have if they lost to Poland and as many as Poland would have if they lost to Argentina. A loss or draw would eliminate him from the tournament.

GOAL OF THE DAY

With elimination on the line, Lionel Messi has come out on top for Argentina.

SUPPORT OF THE DAY

Robert Lewandowski had to wait for Poland’s second goal to add his name to the scoresheet, but he made his first possible by scrambling to keep the ball in play and finding Piotr Zieliński running towards goal.

SAVE OF THE DAY

It’s hard to say which of Wojciech Szczęsny was more impressive: the penalty save or the follow-up save, in which he had to lunge in the opposite direction from where the penalty was placed.

We’ll go with the second one.

Japan vs. Costa Rica5 a.m. ET on FS1

Japan upset the German giants in their opener of the group stage, so a win against Costa Rica – who lost to Spain 7-0 on Wednesday – shouldn’t be a problem, is it not? Well, if that statement is true, then Japan would be the first team from E to advance to the knockout stages. Japan also qualified for the Round of 16 in 2018.

Belgium vs Morocco8 a.m. ET on FS1

Belgium did not earn three points so convincingly against Canada on Wednesday. Will it look more like the dark horse contenders so many thought it would be against Morocco, or will the Moroccans do what Canada couldn’t and earn the points?

Croatia v Canada11 a.m. ET on FS1

Croatia and Morocco stood scoreless with their opposing defensive styles. Don’t expect the same on Sunday, as the Canucks are notorious for spreading out defenses. Croatia must respond with their own scoring opportunities.

Spain v Germany2 p.m. ET on FS1

One of the most anticipated clashes of the group stage is now bigger as the Germans could be knocked out the moment the ball is kicked. The best case for Die Mannschaft is a Japan-Costa Rica draw.
