Weissenstein Palace

Located in Pommersfelden, Bavaria, Weissenstein Palace is steeped in rich heritage and is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest Baroque buildings. The historic palace features prominently in Netflix movies The Empress, where it serves as the main royal residence of Sisi. Host Countess Benedicta von Schönborn-Wiesentheid explained why she decided to list her family’s home on Airbnb: “Empress Elisabeth, affectionately known as Sisi, is an all-time favorite historical figure: a sportswoman, an icon of fashion, a traveler, a poetess and a tragic heroine who fell to the blade of an assassin. As she was born in Bavaria, it’s both exciting and fitting to bring this legendary woman home and share a little insight into her world.

The Netflix series The Empress

When rebellious Elisabeth, “Sisi”, meets Franz, Emperor of Austria, the young couple’s extraordinary love completely blurs the dynasty’s power structure. After the wedding, the young empress must not only find herself in a world that is foreign to her, but also assert herself in front of Sophie, her stepmother, who had been the most powerful woman at court. Franz’s unpredictable brother Maxi, who had always stood in his powerful brother’s shadow, turns Sisi’s emotional world upside down. As enemy troops form on the borders of the Habsburg Empire, a new revolution looms in Vienna. Elisabeth must find out who she can trust and what it costs to become the empress and the figure of hope for an entire nation.

The stay

Weissenstein Castle has been occupied by the same family since its construction in the 18th century: the house of Schönborn. Host Countess Benedicta von Schönborn-Wiesentheid will welcome guests into the palace and lead them through the magnificent entrance hall to their grand suite. The sequel has been given an imperial makeover in the lavish style that Sisi would have been very familiar with. Located in the west wing of the palace, the suite is normally reserved exclusively for the Schönborn family. During their stay, guests will enjoy an exclusive tour of the house, seeing parts of the buildings that are closed to the public, including the ornate “Seashell Room” where Sisi-inspired dinner and breakfast will be served.

How to book

As Sisi would have celebrated her 185th birthday this year, aspiring emperors and empresses can request to book this exclusive getaway for $183 starting Nov. 2 on Airbnb. There are two individual bookings available, June 19 and June 20, 2023. Each booking is suitable for a maximum of two people.
